  14.         <text><span class="style42"></span><span class="style12">BHUTAN</span><span class="style14"></span><span class="style42">Official name:</span><span class="style13"> Druk-yul (Realm of the Dragon/Bhutan)</span><span class="style42">Member of:</span><span class="style13"> UN</span><span class="style42">Area: </span><span class="style13">46500 km2 (17954 sq mi)</span><span class="style42">Population: </span><span class="style13">1442000 (1990 UN est; 1992 Bhutanese government estimates give a population of over 700000)</span><span class="style42">Capital: </span><span class="style13">Thimphu 27000 (1991 est)</span><span class="style42">Language: </span><span class="style13">Dzongkha (Tibetan; official; 70%); Nepali (30%)</span><span class="style42">Religion: </span><span class="style13">Buddhist (70%), Hindu (25%)</span><span class="style42">GOVERNMENT</span><span class="style13">Bhutan is a hereditary monarchy in which the King shares power with a Council of Ministers, the Buddhist Head Abbot and a 151-member National Assembly, comprising 106 members directly elected by universal adult suffrage for three years and other appointed members. There are no political parties.</span><span class="style42">GEOGRAPHY</span><span class="style13">The Himalaya ΓÇô which in Bhutan rise to 7554 m (24784 ft) at Khula Kangri ΓÇô cover most of Bhutan. The valleys of central Bhutan are wide and fertile. The Duars Plain, a subtropical jungle, lies along the Indian border. </span><span class="style42">Climate: </span><span class="style13">The climate is tropical and very wet in the Duars Plain. Temperatures get progressively lower with altitude, resulting in permanent snow cover in the north. Precipitation is heavy.</span><span class="style42">ECONOMY</span><span class="style13">Bhutan is one of the poorest and least developed countries in the world. Over 90% of the labor force is involved in producing food crops. </span><span class="style42">Currency: </span><span class="style13">Ngultrum.</span><span class="style42">HISTORY</span><span class="style13">Tibetan influence over Bhutan from the 16th century was followed by Chinese overlordship (1720). Contact with British-dominated India (from 1774) led to border friction and partial annexation in 1865. In 1949 India returned this territory but assumed influence over BhutanΓÇÖs external affairs. In 1907 the governor of Tongsa became BhutanΓÇÖs first king. In the 1990s there has been discrimination against the Nepali minority.</span></text>
